Disappointing
The story is very disappointing.
Nearly no tension building. No suspens. The events are very expected. No surprise what so ever.
At its pic the story is anticlimactic. Meh.

A monster book about people, not mermaids
I quite enjoyed this story. Good atmosphere, decent writing, and credible and, for the most part mysterious, critters from the deep. I would personally have preferred not to have the few chapters from the PoV of the "mermaids" but they were ok. I just prefer my monsters terrifyingly incomprehensible, that's the Lovecraft fan in me :P
What struck me more was that this story is really, as it should be in Horror really, about people. In what reviews I've seen, people complained about all the backstory for the characters and how most of them are "unlikable". I mean , of you only line Creature Features, I guess that's fair. I enjoy a good monster romp but in i don't think it works as well in books as it would in comics, videogames or film.
I don't entirely agree with the second point but as for the first, the backstory shows us how the character's actions led them to the point they are now. it's ultimately about humanity itself being to blame for their narcissistic, selfish etc ambitions. I'd the ocean fights back, we have no-one to blame but ourselves.
Overall, while I would not rave about this book, and I prefer other Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire books and series, I would recommend for someone looking for a slower burn, closed space horror novel.
As for the audiobook, the reader has a good pace and is clear but I didn't care for her character voices. She does good accents though so there were no cringe moments for me on that respect. The acting is a bit wooden in place but, all in all, I've definitely heard a lot worse.
Pros: Boats, horrors from the deep, believable science babble, LGBT+ characters, disabled characters, would make a good movie
Cons: ocassional "monster" PoV in a story not about being a monster, a little too cinematic rather than literary (no, not as in Literary with a big L, rather in the sense as "made to be read"), too many digressions in the wrong places.

Good old fashioned monster story
Quite good! My first Mira Grant book and I liked it enough to pick up the sequel and others by her. Not sure why a previous review said it was about the monstrosity of mankind, as the vast majority of characters were likeable, flawed, and very human. None of them are outright monstrous, and even when they are ruthless, they remain relatable. Takes a whole to get going but once it does, the pace doesn't let up. If you're specifically looking for books with great sapphic representation, this has am excellent lesbian character and a very well presented bisexual character - both written with care and attention. The disabled characters and neurodiverse cast are all the better. If you don't care about any of that and just want a fun monster book - - this is also for you. Would make a great film.
