Résumé de l'éditeur

Jaroslav Hasek's world-famous satirical farce The Good Soldier Svejk has been translated into over 60 languages, and is one of the best-known Czech works ever published.
A soldier in the First World War who never actually sees any combat, Josef Å vejk is the awkward protagonist - and none of the other characters can quite decide whether his bumbling efforts to get to the front are genuine or not. Often portrayed as one of the first anti-war novels, Hasek's classic satire is a tour-de-force of modernist writing, influencing later writers such as Hemingway, Faulkner and Joseph Heller.

Lost in Translation?

Nothing is sadder that humour that is not amusing.

Perhaps due to loss in translation, this applies to this rather pathetic work.

Here, characters are shallow and predictable and the plot is just non-existent, short vignettes following each other aimlessly, presumably in order to provide comic effect.

This is not in any way successful but proves rather irritating.

Although some may see the whole work as an apt analogy to the absurdity of warfare, it is difficult to recommend to anyone to invest time and energy with it.

excellente performance

le talent du narrateur donne vie à ce roman drôle et truculent. Une critique sans concession de la guerre et de l empire austro hongrois.
